Damon Albarn has hinted that a new Gorillaz album could be in the works for 2025.
The Blur star made these comments while speaking with French magazine, Les Inrockuptibles, where he spoke about The Magic Flute II, La Malédiction, which is a sequel to Mozart's The Magic Flute Opera. Albarn had created an electronic opera for this.
When quizzed about what 2025 has in store for Gorillaz, Albarn said: “I’m finishing a new Gorillaz album. One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025! Unless someone accuses me of taking my foot off the gas!”.
Previously, Jamie Hewlitt, Gorillaz co-creator and artist, also commented under an Instagram post which appeared to echo Albarn's comments on the matter.
With a thumbs up emoji, Hewlett wrote: “Yes, the new album is coming out this year".
According to this post, which was shared during another interview with French podcast, Nova, Damon Albarn said that this Gorillaz album was to be completed in six weeks' time.
This immediately prompted fans to take to Reddit to express their excitement.
“Does this potentially mean they could go back on tour as well?”, one fan commented. Another added: “First time I’m seeing it. I’d love another album, so I’m hoping it happens".
While others were excited, others were not so enthused. “Because doyathing dropped and they went on a 7-8 year hiatus. Damon kept saying ‘deltarune tomorrow.’ There was a huge hiatus between demon days and plastic beach as well. At this point Damon is just saying stuff. He’s got “multiple albums of Gorillaz” kept for himself", another added.
Speaking of Damon Albarn, the musician had previously revealed in July last year, that he does not agree with Bob Dylan's policy of banning the use of mobile phones at concerts. More on this story from Nova here.
