Dublin City Council’s head of waste management says some residents in Dublin’s north inner city have “no sense of pride” and “dump their waste daily” on the street.

Barry Woods said “multi-let” properties generate a “huge amount of waste” and a change in legislation to make landlords responsible for waste collections should be considered.

He was responding to reports from Irish Business Against Litter, which repeatedly ranks the north inner city as the dirtiest urban area in the country.

The anti-litter lobby along with An Taisce surveys cleanliness across 40 urban areas. Last year put the north inner city rock bottom of the league table.

Mr Woods told councillors that Dublin had 8.5m visitors in 2024 “yet (they) are compared to the likes of Ennis or Tralee”.

In stead he says ..“we should be compared to Glasgow or Manchester, a city of comparable size that would have similar visitor numbers to us”.

Mr Woods said vacant and derelict sites present additional problems. Ibal had criticised the presentation of a derelict Georgian house at 30 North Frederick Street “used as a dumping ground”.
