Noel Gallagher has said that iconic Oasis album ‘Definitely Maybe’ best defines who they were as a band.

Former Oasis guitarist Gallagher, who wrote every track on the album, spoke about ‘Definitely Maybe’ in a recent interview, ahead of its 30th anniversary at the end of this month (August 29).

‘Definitely Maybe’ was Oasis’ debut album in 1994, going on to sell 6.9 million copies worldwide, sitting behind (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? as the second most streamed album of that decade.

The album was also recently performed by former Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher at a sold out tour across the UK and Ireland this Summer, including hits Live Forever, Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Supersonic, Cigarettes & Alcohol among others.

“only through time”

Speaking recently, Noel Gallagher reflected on the album’s iconic status that it carries today.

“We knew the songs were great because we played them every night and all the shows were outrageous. But at that time it was just a good album – nothing more, nothing less. It’s only through time that it has become what it is now”, Gallagher said.

In a previous interview, Noel Gallagher also described ‘Definitely Maybe’ as “the last great punk album”.

“We were a punk band with Beatles melodies,” he said.

“We had no effects, barely any equipment, just loads of attitude, 12 cans of Red Stripe and ambition. If you listen to that and Never Mind The Bollocks, they’re quite similar. That album was about the angst of being a teenager in 1977. Fast forward to 1994 and Definitely Maybe is about the glory of being a teenager. It’s being down the park with a ghetto blaster distilled. It’s no coincidence that it’s lasted this long”.

Turning back to his more recent interview, Noel Gallagher admitted that Oasis “didn’t really know what we were doing” when they recorded for this album with producer Owen Morris back in the early 1990s.

“We just set the gear up and got into character and pressed record. The rest, as they say, is mystery”, Gallagher explained.

To mark this special milestone, Oasis confirmed that a special 30th anniversary reissue of ‘Definitely Maybe’ which features previously unheard recordings and outtakes. It will be available on August 30. More on this from Nova here.

Last week, Noel Gallagher also responded to a fan who called for Oasis to reunite. Read more on this here.
