Donald Trump is set to become the first American President in history to be impeached twice.
A vote will take place in the US House of Representatives today. As the Democrats hold the majority in the House, the vote will pass.
For Trump to be convicted, a two-thirds majority is needed in the Senate. This means that at least 17 Republicans will be needed to vote in favour of conviction, along with the Democrats. The New York Times have reported that around 20 Republicans are open to voting to convict the President.
Donald Trump is being impeached after the chaotic scenes that took place at the US congress last week. The article of impeachment reads as:
“Donald John Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law.”
Since the insurrection in Washington, the tide has change for Trump as senior Republicans are backing the impeachment.
Republican Senate Leader, Mitch McConnell is said to be pleased that impeachment is taking place. He believes that this impeachment vote will help the Republican party rid themselves of Trump.
Liz Cheney, daughter of former US Vice-President, Dick Cheney has vowed to back the impeachment as she said that Trump “summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.”
She went on to add “There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”
Three other Republican House members – John Katko, Adam Kinzinger and Fred Upton have said they would also vote for impeachment.
An interesting part to this saga is that the vote today will take place in the same chamber that officials fled last week as Trump’s mob invaded, seeking to cause harm on Vice-President Mike Pence and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the rioters tried to stop the transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden.
With the inauguration ceremony set to take place next week, the FBI have issued a stark warning that more riots could take place at any of the 50 capitals across the United States.
Donald Trump has been banned from nearly all social media sites, including YouTube. You can read Radio Nova’s report on it here.
Trump becoming the first President to be impeached twice is symbolical of his reign. He was never fit to hold office and his response to the pandemic has been the worse in the world.
As he will become the first President ever to be impeached twice, he will go down as being the worst American President of all time.
