The Doobie Brothers are in the process of releasing a brand new album, which will see them reunite with bandmate Michael McDonald.

This album marks the band’s first original studio release with McDonald since 1980’s One Step Closer.

McDonald’s last contribution to a Doobie Brothers came in 2014, where his vocals could be heard to several songs on their Southbound LP, which also featured a number of reimagined classics from the band.

Michael McDonald had rejoined Doobie Brothers for their 50th anniversary tour, which had been originally scheduled for 2020. It eventually took place the following year.

While an official release date for this new album was not confirmed at the time of writing, The Doobie Brothers said that they are aiming “for a spring/summer release”.

Tom Johnston To Step Away From Doobie Brothers

Last year, Doobie Brothers’ guitarist/singer Tom Johnston had confirmed that he would be stepping away from the band due to a back injury.

While he did say that he was hoping “for a speedy recovery”, Johnston was told by doctors that he “should not be performing at this time”.

“I hope for a speedy recovery and can’t wait to get back on the road and continue doing what I love”, Johnston said in his statement.

“I would like to thank Pat, Michael, John and the entire Doobie Brothers band for covering for me while I recover from back surgery. … I’m sure they will bring it every night as they always do”.
