Patti Scialfa, wife of singer Bruce Springsteen, has revealed her ongoing battle with blood cancer.
Scialfa who was diagnosed with this illness in 2018, has confirmed this news to the public for the first time.
She has also been a longtime member of Springsteen’s E Street Band since 1984, and married to the music legend since 1991.
The musician was also inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame by Springsteen last October, with the Boss describing her as his “secret weapon”. More on this from Nova here.
“become a challenge for me”
Patti Scialfa confirmed her ongoing cancer battle in the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
“In 2018, well, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma”, Scialfa said.
She also added that “touring has become a challenge for me” following her diagnosis.
“This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she added. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that”.
The documentary will be available to stream on Disney+ from October 25.
Multiple myeloma forms in the plasma cells, and can be found in the bone marrow. It has been described by the Mayo Clinic as “Multiple myeloma treatment isn’t always needed right away. If the multiple myeloma is slow growing and isn’t causing symptoms, close watching might be the first step”.
This illness is rare, with the American Cancer Society noting that it affects less than 1% of women in the US.
The couple have three sons together, and also became grandparents back in 2022. More on this story here.
Last month, Bruce Springsteen also dismissed rumours that he was set to retire. See more on this story here.
