Car manufacturers will have to fit electric vehicles with a device that mimics an engine noise in the future.
A new EU rule takes effect today following concerns that the silent vehicles were dangerous for pedestrians.
That's when the vehicles are backing up or driving slowly, although drivers will have the power to deactivate the devices if they think it is necessary.
