Elton John feels that the decision taken to legalise the use of marijuana in the USA and Canada, was "one of the greatest mistakes of all time".

The music legend, who celebrated 34 years of sobriety this year, still feels that marijuana is a gate-way drug which leads users to other substances.

Elton John took a step away from music in 1990 to focus on his recovery, having struggled with addiction issues for years.

In his memoir, which was released in 2019, the singer detailed how bad his addiction got, including incidents such as hijacking a Rolling Stones show whilst high on cocaine, and mistaking Bob Dylan for his gardener while high.

While he stated that a myriad of musicians abused drugs between the 1970s and 1990s, he admitted that his own drug use was "noticed" by many.

Elton John On: "one of the greatest mistakes of all time"

In a new interview, Elton John has claimed that Canada and the USA were wrong to legalise the use of marijuana.

“I maintain that it’s addictive. It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned—and I’ve been stoned—you don’t think normally. Legalising marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time", he told Time magazine.

When asked if he feels the same way when it comes to alcohol, David Furnish, Elton John's husband said that while it it is deemed normal and accepted in society, it is not as safe as people often make out.

Elton John's journey to sobriety, has seen him become a beacon of hope to other household names. The singer is Eminem's sponsor, while he also helped to organise Robin Williams' first stint in rehab.

Earlier this month, the singer also offered a fresh update regarding his current health situation, revealing that he has “lost all my eyesight”. More on this here.
