A past student of Terenure College in Dublin has described his former English teacher, John McClean, as “vile” and “evil personified“.
The 75-year-old, of Casimir Avenue, Harold’s Cross, Dublin 8, abused him and twenty-two other boys during his time at the fee-paying school.
McClean was also a rugby coach at Terenure College and he had access to the children through his role as costume fitter for the school plays.
The abuse took place in various locations, including his classroom, office, the school’s concert hall and a physio treatment room between 1973 and 1990.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has been hearing harrowing details of the abuse all day, and his sentence hearing is likely to take the rest of the week.
Aside from removing McClean as the costume fitter, the judge heard no action was taken when a complaint was made to the principal in 1979.
