The family of late singer Amy Winehouse are apparently in talks to turn the singer's life into a West End musical. "There's so much more to her than just the drugs and alcohol".
The iconic soul singer died from alcohol poisoning at just 27 years old in September 2011. The documentary about her life, 'Amy' was released in 2015 and covered her rise to fame, her struggles with it and her battle with addiction. Members of her family weren't pleased with the film, particularly Dad Mitch, who was very critical of it.
At the Amy Winehouse Foundation Gala in London, Amy's father Mitch spoke about the potential musical to The Sun. He said that it would focus more on her talent and music rather than her battle with addiction.
“A musical celebrating her life and music is being talked about for the near future,” said Mitch. “It is something I’d really like to happen and I’ve said I’m happy for it to go ahead.”
Mitch had been very critical of the film ‘Amy’ – describing it as “very hurtful”, and claiming that it “did not show her sense of fun”. Mitch is pursuing his own documentary about the singer's life -which he is hoping to start work on soon.
Producer, musician and friend of Amy's, Mark Ronson, defended the film. He said that it “puts her back on the pedestal where she belongs”.
“I know there were a few things the family weren’t happy about,” he said. “I’m a huge supporter of the family and really sympathise with their concerns, but this film gives Amy that legend status.”
We'll be sure to let you know more about the musical as we hear it!
