The former home of music icon Freddie Mercury is up for sale.
The house which is located in Garden Lodge in Kensington, West London, is on the market for offers in excess of £30 million. It used to be described by the man himself as “his country house in central London”.
Freddie Mercury bought the house in 1980, before renovating it to suit his own unique sense of style, and collection of art around the world.
The house itself, was built in the Neo-Georgian style in 1907, and includes a fully mirrored dressing room, a double-height dining room, library, a bar, and Japanese-style garden with water features and a topiary.
“the most glorious memory box”
When Mercury died in 1991 from complications relating to AIDS, he left the house to his best friend Mary Austin, who went on to live in it for 30 years.
“This house has been the most glorious memory box, because it has such love and warmth in every room”, Austin said of the house. “It has been a joy to live in and I have many wonderful memories here. Now that it is empty, I’m transported back to the first time we viewed it”.
She added, “Ever since Freddie and I stepped through the fabled green door, it has been a place of peace, a true artist’s house, and now is the time to entrust that sense of peace to the next person”.
Any details regarding the house were not published online at the time of writing.
All potential buyers will also be vetted ahead of viewing, to ensure they have the necessary funds to purchase the property.
Last year, an exhibit showcasing a range of Mercury possessions went on display at Sotheby’s.
Such items included a crown and cloak worn by Mercury during his final on stage appearance in 1986. More on this here.
