A Garda was assaulted in Dublin following a public order incident on Abbey Street in the city centre.

The incident took place Saturday afternoon, shortly after 1pm. One member of An Garda Síochána received injuries to his arm, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

He was taken to the Mater University Hospital for treatment. It is understood the garda was cut during the incident.

A second garda was also injured, the President of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) said.

A man in his 20s has been charged in connection with an investigation into the incident, and is due before Cloverhill District Court in Dublin on Tuesday.

Garda welfare services have been put in place for the Garda member.

President of the GRA, Mark O’Meara, said that the injuries suffered by the Garda is a “stark reminder” of the dangers that members of An Garda Síochána face on a daily basis.

“I would just like to wish our injured colleague a speedy recovery in what was an extremely difficult situation,” O’Meara said.

“Another member also received injuries in the incident and our thoughts are with them both and their families.

“While it can be rewarding, a career in policing can be an extremely dangerous one and there is never a reason or excuse for attacks and assaults on our members. I commend these colleagues on their bravery and actions today and also any members who find themselves in harms way while policing the frontline.”

Investigations are ongoing at this time.
