Students have been issued a warning about student accommodation fraud.

It is claimed, over 20 thousand euro was stolen from twelve students in July this year.

The figures show that more than half of the victims of accommodation fraud were male, while 46% are female.

34 per-cent of the victims are under 25 years old, while 66 per-cent are under the age of 33.

They are advising people to be wary of individuals who claim to be out of the country and cannot show the rent of the property unless they pay a deposit.

The National Economic Crime Bureau say potential renters should look for warning signs.

They include a property only advertised through social media or the person letting the location, who will only communicate via Messenger or WhatsApp.

Students are being urged to push for direct answers and if responses are vague, they’re advising to disengage immediately.
