In just 10 days of the Driving Under Intoxicant (DUI) campaign, Gardaí have made 260 arrests in comparison to 243 for the same period last year.
The campaign has been running since December 1st, with 260 people arrested under the suspicion of DUI between the 1st and 10th.
Authorities have confirmed most cases were related to alcohol, nonetheless a minority have tested positive for drug driving.
Multiple of arrested drivers have had an alcohol concentration of more than 100 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath which is in stark contrast to the national limits.
The limit currently stands at 9 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath for a specified driver which is known as a learner, novice and professional driver, while it is 22 micrograms for a non-specified driver.
The campaign will continue right across the festive season and will concentrate on intoxicated drivers all day every day as Gardaí state: ‘These high risk drivers put everyone’s life in danger.’
