The Regional Independent Group has accepted Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy’s ruling that its four TDs cannot form a Dáil technical group.

However, they are now calling for significant changes to Dáil standing orders to ensure Independent TDs supporting the Government are granted speaking rights.

The group, which includes Danny Healy-Rae, Barry Heneghan, Gillian Toole, and Michael Lowry, had sought to establish a technical group that would allow them to position themselves on the opposition benches while still backing the Government.

Following the Ceann Comhairle’s decision, they have acknowledged that this is no longer an option.

Now, the focus has shifted to securing speaking time in the chamber. The group argues that under current rules, they are caught in a political "no man’s land," unable to access the same opportunities as opposition TDs or Government-aligned independents.

Michael Lowry has urged the Government to find a solution to accommodate what he calls "supportive Independents." In response, Government Chief Whip Mary Butler and party leaders will begin discussions on amending Dáil standing orders to ensure all TDs have the right to speak.

The issue of speaking rights has long been a contentious one, particularly for Independent TDs who do not fit neatly into Government or opposition structures.
