An investigation is continuing into the death of a man near Grafton St in Dublin early this morning.
The man, understood to be in his 30s, was stabbed on South Anne Street, and pronounced dead a short time later in St James's Hospital.
A second man is receiving treatment for injuries.
Labour’s Dublin Spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin MEP has called the tragic incident a “devastating reminder of how much the capital has changed—and not for the better.”
Mr Ó Ríordáin said: “Before the election, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil made a big show of the publication of Dublin City Taskforce report. They claimed to have a plan to tackle crime, dereliction, and anti-social behaviour.
“But where is the implementation report? Where is the follow-through? Promises mean nothing if they don’t translate into action.
“We know the scale of vacancy and dereliction in Dublin city centre. Labour has consistently called for a serious, long-term plan to bring these spaces back into use, creating a city that feels safe, welcoming, and vibrant. But instead, Dublin is being left behind because of the political vacuum at the heart of decision-making.
“How many more tragic incidents will it take before they act?”
Local Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan, has urged anyone with information to pass it onto Gardaí.
“Dublin woke up this morning to the deeply distressing and heartbreaking news that a life was taken in the early hours of this morning. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims family and friends, who must be heartbroken,” Mr Doolan said.
“I also want to wish the other victim, the injured victim, a speedy and full recovery. I would make an appeal to anybody with any information or any footage no matter how small or insignificant they think it is to please cooperate with the Gardaí.”
