The Cabinet will today consider a proposal to extend the current 5km travel restriction that has been in place since December.
It is believed that the 5km rule would be widened to a county-wide limit from mid-April.
However little or no changes are expected to be made on April 5th itself.
Last night NPHET warned the government against any significant easing of Covid restrictions over the next few weeks amid fears of a fourth wave before the summer.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin will make an announcement later today revealing the new set of restrictions.
