Green Day’s hit ‘American Idiot’ has officially hit one billion streams on Spotify.

American Idiot was the title track to Green Day’s famous album, which marked its 20th anniversary this year.

This is the second track from the band which has reached this milestone, with ‘Basket Case’ also joining this exclusive club.

Following the track’s release in 2004, American Idiot reached Number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100. It did reach Number 3 in the UK, as well as garnering four Grammy Award nominations.

Green Day have also been busy celebrating their new album ‘Saviors’.

The album has seen Green Day preview the following tracks, ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’, ‘Bobby Sox’, ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’, ‘Dilemma’ and ‘Saviors’.

Back in January, the band’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong spoke about Bobby Sox in a press release.

Calling the track “the 90s song that we could never wrote”, the Green Day singer said: “’Bobby Sox’” is one of my favourite songs on the album. It’s the ’90S song that we never wrote. It started out being a song I wrote for my wife but as it materialized, I wanted to switch it up and added, ‘Do you wanna be my boyfriend?’ on top of ‘Do you wanna be girlfriend’… So the song becomes a kind of universal anthem”.

Armstrong also spoke about the track’s references to trans issues.

The song explores gender fluidity, with Armstrong calling the moral panic over such topics  “f****** close-minded”. More on this from Nova here.

Last October, The Cranberries’ track ‘Zombie’ also hit one billion streams on Spotify.
