Leonard Cohen turns 80 years old next month and the Canadian singer-songwriter is apparently going to release a new album for his birthday.

Popular Problems will be the singer's thirteenth studio LP and his first since Old Ideas, released two years ago.

Rumours of the impending record, broke at Dublin's fan-run Leonard Cohen - music and poetry festival. Although Cohen did not make the trip to Ireland for the event, it was an officially sanctioned fan convention.

A foreward was written in the programme notes by Finnish Cohen fan Jarkko Arjatsalo. Arjatsalo runs the official Cohen website leonardcohenfiles.com. He said: “Leonard has worked hard on his next studio album of entirely new songs. He asked me to let you know that Popular Problems will be out at the end of September, shortly after his 80th birthday.”

Jarkko Arjatsalo, wrote to Rolling Stone about the statement saying the information had come “directly from Leonard." “There are no tour plans! We are now looking forward to a great new studio album," he wrote.

Also adding fuel to the rumours, is Sylvie Simmons, who wrote the Cohen biography 'I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen'. Simmons posted on twitter account that: “A new Leonard Cohen studio album – yep, as good as done and due the last week of September, just after his 80th birthday. Amazing!”
