History could remain an optional subject at Junior Cert level following a review by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment.
The review was ordered after criticism that history was removed as a core subject.
The Secondary School teachers union the ASTI says it's disappointed at the recommendation by the NCCA.
The Minister for Education must now decide if he will accept the findings of the review and allow History to be made an optional subject.
