Intel - Leixlip

It is reported that global firm Intel is poised to announce plans imminently to cut more than 20 percent of its staff, aiming to eliminate bureaucracy at the struggling chipmaker.

The move looks likely to impact some of the 5,000 employees at its Leixlip site in Co. Kildare, although the company has yet to clarify how many Irish-based staff will be deprived potentially of work.

The company has invested over €30bn in its Leixlip campus since it broke ground 35 years ago, making it one of the most significant US multinationals based in Ireland.

Any moves would be the first major restructuring under new chief executive officer Lip-Bu Tan, who took the helm last month.

The cutbacks follow efforts last year to slash about 15,000 jobs. Reports say the semiconductor facility in North Kildare was to become the first outside of the US to mass produce high-end chips used for artificial intelligence and data centres in its battle to quell the influence of leading chip maker Nvidia.

A facility in Arizona is preparing to begin production of Intel’s most advanced chip – the 18A according to various reports.
