Joe Biden has has announced that he will step down from the upcoming US Presidential election.

Mr Biden confirmed this news via his official X account, having faced increasing calls to stand down in recent weeks.

Recently, a shock poll from the state of Michigan also illustrated the growing the sense of feeling that he would lose out to Republican candidate Donald Trump, should he have decided to stand again.

This also comes after a letter from actor George Clooney who is also a long time donor of the Democrat Party, was published in the New York Post, called for Joe Biden to step down from the presidential race.

“It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big f***ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020”, Clooney wrote.

“He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate. Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw”. Check out that letter in full here.

“the greatest honor”

Taking to X, Joe Biden released this statement, announcing his decision to stand down from the upcoming election.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President”, Biden wrote.

“And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term”.

Joe Biden also added that he would: “speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision”.

Earlier, influential US senator Joe Manchin had also joined a list of high profile politicians calling for Biden to step down.

“I came to this decision with a heavy heart, but I think it’s time to pass the torch to a new generation”, Mr Manchin told CNN.

Mr Biden has been isolating with Covid-19 at his Delaware home since last Wednesday.
