Kellie Harrington has become the first Irish woman to win Olympic medals at two different games.

The boxer eased into the semi finals of the 60kg division with a unanimous decision victory over Columbian fighter, Angie Paola Valdes.

That means the Dubliner is guaranteed at least a bronze with her next fight coming on Saturday night and then a possible gold medal fight on Tuesday August 6th.

In the 100 years since Ireland first participated in the summer Olympics, only Dr Pat O’Callaghan (gold in the hammer in 1928 and 1932), Paddy Barnes (bronze in boxing in 2008 and 2012) and Paul O’Donovan (double sculls silver and gold in 2016 and 2021) have medalled at two Games.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan attended a special viewing party of Kellie’s fight in Diamond Park in Dublin’s North East Inner City to cheer her on with hundreds gathered to watch, saying she is one of Ireland’s most successful and best-loved sporting stars.

Speaking to RTE after her first fight in Paris, Kellie reserved special praise for her loved ones and her favourite breakfast show: PJ Gallagher & Jim McCabe on Radio Nova’s Morning Glory!
