A senior figure in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group has been arrested in Dubai on suspicion of murder in connection with a warrant issued for his arrest in Ireland.

Sean McGovern is wanted for questioning over the murder of a man in Dublin almost eight years ago. Originally from Crumlin, McGovern has been living in Dubai after leaving Ireland during the Hutch Kinahan feud.

It’s reported he’d been acting as Daniel Kinahan’s right hand man. Gardai stated in April this year that the High Court had issued a European Arrest Warrant for him.

He’s been named as being a senior figure in the Kinahan Organised Crime Group and is wanted for questioning about the murder of 62-year-old Noel ‘DuckEgg‘ Kirwan who was shot dead just before Christmas eight years ago.

McGovern was injured during the Regency Hotel shooting in 2016. He suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach in the infamous incident but was discharged from hospital several days later and refused to assist the garda probe.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee says while she can’t comment on any individual case those involved in organised crime should know there is no hiding place and they will face justice

McGovern was once a key element in the Byrne Organised Crime Group and for years ran the Kinahan’s Irish operation before moving to the Emirates following the murder of Kirwan in December 2016.

In March 2016 — a month after the Regency attack — Bureau officers targeted the homes of key gang members. At McGovern’s house they seized cash, a Rolex watch, a BMW car and evidence that led to a CAB case against him and his partner by charging them with availing of taxpayers’ money to fund their legal bills by seeking legal aid.

He was named during the US sanctions as being wanted for murder and directing and participating in an organised criminal group.
