Korn’s ‘The Path of Totality’ shadows dubstep and neo-electronica.

Korn’s latest offering, ‘The Path of Totality,’ has the men stepping away from their nu-metal roots. Unlike any of their previous nine studio albums, Korn integrates dubstep and neo-electronica into the heavy tunes on ‘Totality,’ corralling in dubstep hotshots such as Skrillex, Noisia and Excision. The result is a ground-breaking crossbreed of metal and dubstep that leaves one not sure whether to headbang or dance.

Korn lead singer Jonathan Davis says the band didn’t really expect to put together a dubstep-inspired album. “The basis of our band has always been about experimenting and pushing the envelope,” Davis told Billboard. “We didn’t expect it to turn into a record. We were just trying something new out, see what happened.”

Davis went on to give a track-by-track breakdown of ‘Totality’ and had this to say about new single ‘Narcissistic Cannibal,’ which features Skrillex and Kill the Noise: “Lyrically, I think a narcissistic cannibal is someone who has just such an ego and is so into themselves that you can watch themselves just eat themselves alive… and I’ve seen lots of people like that.” The album’s lead single, ‘Get Up!’ featuring Skrillex, is close to Davis’ heart. “That was the very first song we wrote of the experiment, so that song means a lot to us,” he said. “That was the first time we did it… It was really just a work in progress. We didn’t know what … we were doing, we were just going with what felt right.”

Former Korn guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch is currently recording a Christian-themed, hard rock album with producer Jasen Rauch (formerly of RED) in Nashville. Welch is shooting for a 2012 release, and read more about the sessions, here.
