In 2015, Universal Music amassed a large selection of old demos that Kurt Cobain had taped in the very early years.
That was for the album Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, which was a record that served as a soundtrack to the documentary film of the same name. The film charted Cobain’s early life right up until his death in 1994.
Amid the plethora of demos, there’s a few tunes of note, there’s a rather eerie cover of the Beatles’ And I Love Her (below), and also an early version of Been A Son, which was later cut by Nirvana for the Blew EP.
Also, there’s reportedly a tape that claims to be Nirvana’s first demo doing the rounds.
According to Jim Farber from The Guardian: ‘The audio is woefully muffled but the performance shows some verve, capturing the fledgling band as they run through early pieces like Blew, Love Buzz and an especially roiling Spank Thru.’
Meanwhile, daughter of Kurt and Courtney, Frances Bean Cobain shared via Instagram last month that she is officially two years sober. It’s never been a secret that both her parents struggled with drugs. In the lengthy post she spoke of her own struggles and her desire to lead a healthy meaningful life as an artist.
‘I want to have the capacity to recognize & observe that my journey might be informative, even helpful to other people who are going through something similar or different. It is an everyday battle to be in attendance for all the painful, bazaar, uncomfortable, tragic, fu**ked up things that have ever happened or will ever happen[…]How we treat our bodies directly correlates to how we treat our souls. It’s all interconnected.’
