Leaving Cert English exams could be set for a major overhaul.

The Irish Times reports that plans are being discussed to change the format from two written papers to one.

Changes are aimed at reducing stress facing students in the written exams.

If agreed, the changes could be brought in for students entering fifth year in September 2026.

Also up for discussion is a project which could be worth up to 40 per cent to be completed by the end of fifth year.

The same changes could be brought in for Maths papers, though talks on that appear to be at a less advanced state.

The changes are under consideration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, under direction from the Education Minister.

Reforms are likely to spark concerns from unions, who may feel aspects of senior cycle reform are flawed or rushed.

Previously, the Teachers Union of Ireland raised red flags and said meaningful consultation must underpin the process.
