This week will mark a year since the death of Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, and to tribute to her, a special screening of Kathryn Ferguson’s documentary Nothing Compares will be screened in Merrion Square.

The film will screened on Merrion Square this Friday (July 26), as part of a four part public screening series across several Dublin parks.

Ahead of this, broadcaster Donald Dineen will also host a pre-screening discussion with Kathryn Ferguson.

Nothing Compares will focus on Sinéad O’Connor’s rise to fame between 1987 and 1993.

It will also look at how the late singer used her status to tackle social issues including Church abuse, racism and misogyny, as well as the backlash she received for confronting such issues, including tearing up a photograph of the Pope in 1992.

Nothing Compares also looks into how society treated women in the public eye at that time, and the push towards equality.

Sinéad O’Connor, Phil Lynott, Shane MacGowan, & Luke Kelly will all be remembered

Each showing is to celebrate a late Irish music legend, titled Remembering Iconic Revolutionary Irish Artists. As well as O’Connor, this special set of screenings will also include Shane MacGowan, Luke Kelly, and Phil Lynott.

Following the screening of ‘Nothing Compares’ on Friday, Herbert Park will host screenings of Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan on August 9, as well as Phil Lynott’s Songs For While I’m Away on August 30.

On September 13, Luke Kelly’s doc Luke will also be screened, marking 40 years since his passing.

Tickets for each of these screenings are priced at €11.35, and are available via this link here.

For those who are unable to make the screening, Nothing Compares will be made available to watch online by the New York-based online screening club for a week from July 26.

Back in June, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan also paid tribute to Sinéad O’Connor. More on this here.

In March, the late singer’s estate also called out former US President Donald Trump for using her music at his political rallies.
