Beloved Irish rockers Aslan have announced their first tour since the passing of Christy Dignam.
The remaining original members, Joe Jewell, Billy McGuinness and Alan Downey announced the news on social media earlier today, with “mixed emotions.”
“After 40 years of playing with our front man Christy, we absolutely know it’s not the same and never will be but we want to continue playing our music and bringing our music to you,” the band said in a statement.
“This is our way of letting our memories of over 4 decades live on and keep Aslan alive within each of us and together and keeping our music alive for you all.”
The band will be fronted by Lee Tomkins, a gifted vocalist and well-known face around the Dublin gig scene who also plays with the popular function band Fallen Empire.
Aslan said Tomkins “has been a huge support to each of us in being able to make this happen.”
This run of gigs will be the Finglas outfit’s first outing since the death of legendary singer and songwriter Christy Dignam in June 2023 following a long battle with cancer.
Dignam formed Aslan in 1982 alongside McGuinness (vocals/guitar/harmonica), Jewell (lead guitar), Downey (drums) and original bassist, Tony McGuinness.
The band’s debut album, Feel No Shame, hit the number one spot on the Irish charts upon its release and spawned the classic single This Is.
Aslan released a further six studio albums as well as the iconic live album Made in Dublin – Live at Vicar Street which conquered the charts in 1999, eventually turning triple platinum.
“We, as always, are so grateful for the love and support you have all shown us, through our difficult times and our good times,” the band said.
“We truly hope we will make you proud and we are looking forward to bringing you some songs that we have never performed live before!”
