New legislation to safeguard the tips of service industry workers is a welcome start, but more needs to be done to improve conditions in the sector.
Thats according to the former ONE Movement National Co-Ordinator.
New tipping laws will entitle employees to their tips and require employers to display information on how gratuities and service charges are distributed among staff.
Fiona Dunne spoke to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism and Hospitality about the legislation this summer.
She says that the move can go further:
"We hope it will be the start of looking at hospitality workers working conditions. We do think there is huge scope for improvement, particularly around pay and treatment. We welcome this but we think it can go much further."
