After nine years OJ Simpson is set to be released from prison for a 2007 kidnapping and armed robbery incident in Las Vegas.
He has served the minimum amount of time required for his 33 year sentence.
His parole is due to expire Sept. 29, 2022, which means he must spend about five years living under the terms of his release. The parole board noted Simpson’s good behavior combined with other factors means he’s eligible for up to a 50 percent reduction in his sentence under Nevada state rules.
Simpson told the parole board that he’d like to go back to Florida, where he purchased a Miami home in 2000 and raised his children.
“I can easily stay in Nevada, but I don’t think you guys want me here,” Simpson said during his parole hearing on Thursday.
In the past year there has been a renewed interest in the slayings due to the ESPN documentary “O.J.: Made in America” and FX miniseries “The People vs. OJ Simpson” which revisited the 1994 slayings.
In 1997, Simpson was found liable in civil court for the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, and was ordered to pay $33.5 million to their surviving family members. Any wages Simpson earns would be used to pay off whatever he still owes to the family.
In 2007, Simpson wrote the controversial book “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.” The book and the rights to it were awarded to the Goldmans by a bankruptcy court in Florida, and as owners of the material, the proceeds from it are given back to them as part of the payment from the civil court ruling.
However Simpson will still be able to access his NFL pension, which is estimated at $25,000 per month, which the Goldman family can’t touch. The actor and pitchman also reportedly receives money from a private pension and the Screen Actors Guild.
So what exactly will OJ Simpson do next?
A lot has changed over the last ten years, in particular it may be quite the adjustment coming back into a world where the off spring of his former friend Robert Kardashian are slowly taking over our minds and soul.
The question of whether OJ will capitalise on that connection remains to be seen, but considering there has always been a lingering question over Khloe Kardashian’s true parentage, we definitely wouldn’t put it past Simpson to make some controversy around that.
Rumours are also flying around that Simpson could get his own reality show. We’re not entirely sure how much we’ll be queuing up to watch that.
