This year Oscar nominations, scheduled to take place on January 17, have been delayed until Sunday 19 January, due to the recent Los Angeles wildfires.

Across the city, wildfires raged across LA, with more than 30,000 people forced to evacuate their homes, and abandon their cars, including several celebrities such as actors Mark Hamill and Eugene Levy, as well as reality TV star Heidi Montag and her husband Spencer Pratt. More on this here.

This also led to the delay in several high profile award nomination ceremonies, including the Academy Awards, with the organisers The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences offering a two day extension to the nominations voting window "to give members more time to cast their ballots".

"we are thinking of you"

In a memo, Chief Executive for the Academy, Bill Kramer, confirmed this news, while offering his condolences to those affected by the fires in LA.

"We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California," it read. "So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you".

This year's Oscars ceremony is to take place on Sunday 2 March at LA's Dolby Theatre.

Elsewhere, the fires have also forced the postponement of the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards.

Originally fixed to take place on 12 January, the ceremony will now take place on January 26.

"This unfolding tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community", said Joey Berlin, Chief Executive of the Critics Choice Association. "All our thoughts and prayers are with those battling the devastating fires and with all who have been affected".

It was also confirmed that the Writers Guild of America Awards, would also be postponed until next Monday (January 13), while the another awards ceremony hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), was also cancelled due to the wildfires.
