Paul Mescal has said that he will do his own singing when he stars in the upcoming series of films about the Beatles, directed by Sam Mendes.
The Irish actor will star in the Sony Pictures produced biopics as Paul McCartney, with fellow Irish actor Barry Keoghan playing Ringo Starr, while Harris Dickinson and Joseph Quinn will star as John Lennon and George Harrison respectively.
The films will also see another Irish actor, Saoirse Ronan starring as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai playing Yoko Ono, Mia McKenna-Bruce playing Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr's first wife, while Amiee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, George Harrison's first wife.
Speaking recently to British GQ, Maynooth native Mescal has insisted that he will be doing his own singing in these films.
"I've learned so much. It's really inspired a love", he said. "I've always loved music, but getting to play one of the great songwriters and great frontmen has really lit a fire in terms of personally writing music and engaging and hearing music in a different way".
Mescal, who has also landed a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Hamnet, has revealed that he met McCartney twice.
"He's the most brilliant man. I feel emotionally attached to him. He received me with great kindness and warmth", Mescal said. "One of the many benefits of shooting a Beatles anthology is that you get to do the job and not talk about the job".
Paul Mescal's latest project, Hamnet, which sees him star opposite Jessie Buckley, is in cinemas now.
Just before Christmas, Paul Mescal said that he was still "processing" the reality of getting approval from Paul McCartney himself for these biopics.
“It’s a huge gift that the four of us are getting to step into their lives, access the music and the Beatles estates themselves, it’s pretty special,” Mescal told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s an unbelievable privilege to have what feels like his blessing. I just can’t believe it". More on this from Nova here.
Last September, Paul Mescal also hailed McCartney has an "extraordinary man".
“He’s an extraordinary man,” Mescal said. “like to spend any time — it’s a crazy sentence to say that I’ve spent time with that man, let alone play him". More on this story from Nova here.
Speaking of the Beatles, Sting was full of praise for the Fab Four for inspiring songwriters to try. According to Sting, the band opened the "floodgates for songwriters to have an attempt at writing songs".
