A petition has been launched to create a monument in honour of music legend Prince, in place of a current Christopher Columbus statue in the singer’s hometown of Minnesota.
Prince died at home last year and fans are rallying behind the campaign to see the musician remembered. The petition currently has 3679 signatures out of a target of 4000. This is part of a greater campaign aiming to replace all statues across the US dedicated to symbols of slavery. The petition says, “Across the nation, city governments are choosing to remove statues of white supremacists, slave owners, and those who threatened the livelihood of Black people.”
“Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, we should honour members of our community whose leadership we find inspirational.”
“We, the undersigned, up submit that the Governor Dayton and the Minnesota State Legislature replace the statue of Columbus with statues representative of Minnesota’s Black and Native communities.”
