Phil Collins has ruled out making any new music in the future.
The former Genesis lead singer made these comments while speaking to Mojo Magazine, where he opened up about how his ongoing health issues have impinged on his ability to make new music, and his desire to do so.
In 2007, the musician suffered severe nerve damage from a spinal injury, which has caused his mobility to deteriorate in recent years. During Genesis' farewell shows in 2022, Collins had to sing sitting down, while his son Nic played the drums.
“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens", Collins said. “But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…".
Last November, a previously unpublished interview from Collins came to light, showing the drummer explaining that he was adjusting to not being able to play the drums anymore. He also says that he would rather not play the drums at all, then not be able to play them properly. More on this from Nova here.
In this latest interview with Mojo, Phil Collins recalled how he answered an ad posted into Melody Maker by Genesis, following the departure of their third drummer John Mayhew.
“They [were] a bit bottled up”, Collins said of his future bandmates.
Prior to the audition, which took place at the home of then Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins also took a dip in the family's swimming pool in his Y-fronts.
Despite joining the band, Phil Collins did admit that he was not a fan of their earlier music, which he likened to “a blancmange”.
“It was sort of formless,” Collins stated. “At my audition we’d listened to some of [first album] Trespass, and it wasn’t one thing or the other. There were harmonies that reminded me of Crosby Stills & Nash, but when it was meant to be hard, like on The Knife, it didn’t sound like they really meant it".
All these years later, it would appear that Collins' opinion of Genesis has not changed that much. Find out more here.
