Former Genesis star Phil Collins has offered an update regarding his health.
The druming legend has opened up about his health in an interview, which has only come to light now, having originally taken place in 2022. The interview was shared as part of a new documentary titled, Phil Collins: Drummer First.
A trailer for this upcoming documentary was shared by Drumeo which also shows legendary sticksmen like Chad Smith and Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy praising Collins for his longstanding career. See that trailer here.
In this interview, Phil Collins stated that he was still adjusting to not being able to play the drums anymore, adding that he would rather not play the drums at all than not be able to play them to his full potential.
“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything", he said.
Collins added: “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack of it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles. t’s still kind of sinking in a bit… I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock".
The documentary also saw Phil's son Nic, who took over his father's duties at Genesis' shows in recent years, update fans regarding Phil's health.
Nic said that his father needed a “big surgery on his neck that stemmed from all those years playing drums and bad posture". He also revealed that Phil also suffered a drop-foot, where “one of his feet has no sensation", meaning that he required a cane in order to walk.
Elsewhere in the documentary, Phil Collins received praise from drum educator Dom Famularo.
"The fact that we're living in the time of Phil Collins is almost equal to what it was like when people were living in the time of Mozart", he said.
