Former EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness is now the clear public favourite to become Ireland’s next president.
A new Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll shows she has the highest support at 27% when people were asked to choose from nine right-leaning candidates.
When the list was narrowed to five names from both the left and right, support for McGuinness rose to 34%, with Senator Michael McDowell in second place on 20%.
Meanwhile, there’s little appetite for Conor McGregor entering politics.
A massive 90% of those polled said they wouldn’t vote for him, and nearly 70% said they’d be less likely to support their local TD or councillor if they backed him.
To run for president, a candidate needs the support of 20 Oireachtas members or four local councils.
