President Michael D Higgins has announced his intention to run for a second term in office. He confirmed this morning he’s seeking another seven years in the Arás.
The starting gun has sounded in the race to be President – but it’s unclear yet if Michael D Higgins will actually have any opposition. Fianna Fáil are backing the incumbent. Labour’s Brendan Howlin also saying they’ll likely row in behind the current president.
Sinn Féin may throw in a candidate, with their Ard Comhairle meeting to decide on Saturday. Leader Mary Lou McDonald wants a contest. Fine Gael have yet to decide whether to field someone to contest Michael D, but a number of Ministers have publicly expressed their support for the current president staying in office.
