With Storm Lorenzo due to hit Ireland in the next few hours the Chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland John Purcell is urging people to keep their radio turned on to make sure that they have the most up to date information on the conditions in their local areas.
Purcell said, “Radio stations will be working around the clock to monitor and report on the impact of Storm Lorenzo in every corner of Ireland. Whether its trees down, roads blocked, flooding or school closures the only place to the most up to date, reliable information is on your independent radio station. This will be especially important if electricity lines are cut, access to broadband is gone and phone batteries are dead.”
The importance of radio in keeping people informed during emergency situations such as Storm Lorenzo, was highlighted in Dáil Éireann yesterday as TDs discussed the Broadcasting Amendment Bill. TDs from all parties agreed that the impact and importance of radio in sharing information and connecting communities cannot be overstated. This, however, is under threat and should be protected at all costs.
“When people are isolated or cut off from their communities, as could be the case over the next few days, radio becomes a vital lifeline to connect them to the outside world. Minister Richard Bruton needs to ensure that the Broadcasting Bill assists radio stations throughout the country to continue with the vital public service that audiences appreciate, expect and deserve”.
