Ireland is on high alert as Met Éireann has issued a red weather warning for the majority of the country due to the arrival of Storm Eowyn.

The powerful storm, which is expected to bring gale-force winds, heavy rain, and the risk of coastal flooding, is forecast to hit late Thursday night into Friday morning.

The initial warning covered counties Cork, Limerick, Clare, and Kerry, set to take effect at 3 AM on Friday and lasting until 10 AM. However, the alert has now been expanded and extended to include Galway, with the warning there starting at 3 AM and lasting until midday.

Additionally, the start time for Cork, Limerick, and Kerry has been brought forward to 2 AM, reflecting the storm's increasing severity.

Counties in the east and midlands, including Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Wicklow, Westmeath, Louth, Monaghan, Cavan, and Roscommon, will also be under a red alert from 6 AM on Friday, lasting until noon.

Met Éireann has described the situation as potentially life-threatening, warning of powerful gusts, structural damage, and hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, with wave overtopping and localised flooding anticipated.

In response to the escalating threat, schools in affected areas are expected to close on Friday as a precaution. Public transport services may also face significant disruptions, with delays and cancellations likely across road, rail, and air travel.

Employers have been urged to allow remote working where possible to minimise travel risks.

The National Emergency Co-ordination Group has convened to assess the situation and coordinate the necessary preparations. Authorities are urging the public to secure loose items around homes.

As Storm Eowyn approaches, communities across Ireland are being reminded to take every precaution to ensure their safety. Further updates and advice will be issued as the situation evolves.
