The red carpet was rolled out at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield for the Dublin premiere of war epic DUNKIRK, in cinemas from July 21, and we were there to chat with stars Cillian Murphy & Barry Keoghan.
So what did I think of it?
From filmmaker Christopher Nolan who brought us Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight Trilogy, the film tells the story of Operation Dynamo, which saw thousands of Allied soldiers evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk as the German army advanced towards them in the early stages of World War 2. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
Starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy, One Direction singer Harry Styles, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy the film also features Love/Hates’ Barry Keoghan as a young boy who helps ferry injured soldiers on his boat from the beach
Utilizing a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen Nolan has made a movie masterpiece with this one. And while it’s by no means a perfect film with a few continuity problems and a screenplay that jumps a little too frequently from story to story it’s still a horrifying story, brilliantly told by a cast that outdoes themselves just as much as the director has.
With an opening sequence with sound that will rattle your chest DUNKIRK has you on the edge from start to finish and gets ★★★★★
