A retro car which ran over Tom Cruise in 1980s cult classic movie, Risky Business, has gone up for sale.
The car which has gone up for auction at £1.4 million, was reportedly used to teach the global superstar how to drive a manual car. It also played a key role in the movie itself.
This sale is being organised by Bonham’s Auctioneers at California’s Quail Lodge and Golf Club in Carmel. This takes place on August 16.
Risky Business saw a then-21 year old Tom Cruise star as a rich teenager who has a series of mishaps as well as misadventures, including wrecking his father’s expensive car and turning his family home into a brothel to cover the repair bills.
You know, the usual things that a teenager will get up to when their parents are away!
The film has also been cited as a breakthrough role for Cruise.
Cruise and the Car of the Decade
The car in question is a 1979 Porsche 928, which was even named the Car of the Decade in its day.
The gold bodywork, curvaceous design, and sporty performance also caught the eye of Paul Brickman, the film’s director.
One iconic scene from the movie shows the Porsche rolling off a pier and into Lake Michigan, running over Cruise on its way, who had forgotten to put the handbrake on.
This is one of three identical 928s used in filming, with this one going up for sale for more than one million pounds.
Various interior panels have been signed by the film’s cast. They also feature well-known quotes from the Risky Business script.
“coming of age movies”
Bonhams have confirmed that the car can be sold to an out-of-state or international driver, and can easily find its way to Europe. It cannot stay in California due to emission rules.
“The 1980s were particularly fertile times for high school coming of age movies”, a spokesperson said.
“But before Ferris Bueller took his day off in Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari, fellow Chicagoan Paul Brickman directed a young and largely unheard of actor from upstate New York by the name of Tom Cruise in the 1983 classic Risky Business.
“Co-starring heavily in the film—both in the plot, on the screen, and in the movie poster—is a gold Porsche 928”.
“In addition to its on-film feature, it also figured prominently in Cruise’s own trajectory as an enthusiast and famous executor of his own stunts”.
They also added: “At the start of filming, it is understood that Tom Cruise did not know how to drive a stick, so producer Jon Avnet claims to have taught him the craft of rowing your own on this car”.
Back in June, Tom Cruise took to social media to celebrate the 10th anniversary of ‘Edge of Tomorrow’. More on this from Nova here.
