There's a call to ensure a review into aspects of orthopaedic surgery at Temple Street Hospital in Dublin includes governance issues.

It's after the HSE appointed an expert from the UK to conduct an external review, after a number of serious spinal surgical injuries.

It'll focus on an individual consultant based at Temple Street who is currently not conducting surgeries there.

Children's Health Ireland says everybody known to have been affected has been contacted.

Children's Health Ireland has met with 19 families in recent weeks over the issues identified.

The primary focus of the external review will be in clinical care provided by an individual consultant based at Children's Health Ireland at Temple Street, who is currently not conducting surgeries.

The HSE says a referral has been made to the Irish Medical Council.

The review arises from very serious concerns identified by CHI since last year relating to poor surgical outcomes in spinal surgery at Temple Street, the use of a certain spinal surgical technique and the use of unauthorised implantable devices.

It acknowledges the anxiety the news may cause to patients and families and says everyone known to have been affected has been contacted.
