Robert Smith has paid tribute to his late brother, hailing him for encouraging him to make a go of it with The Cure as a full time band, instead of continuing with his studies.

Smith spoke of this during a recent track-by-track run through of The Cure's latest album, 'Songs Of A Lost World', which arrived last month. (November 1).

The album includes the single, 'I Can Never Say Goodbye', which Smith wrote about his brother, adding that it had "helped him enormously".

“My brother gave me the idea that I could do whatever I wanted", Smith stated. “It’s like, you know, my dad was also very supportive, but far more traditional. He wanted me to finish my education and then be in a band, if that’s what I still wanted to do".

"isn't how the world works"

Elsewhere, Robert Smith explained how his brother: “took [his] side, and I think it was him actually cajoling my dad, because I think otherwise that would have been a problem, because they let me stay at home whilst I got it out of my system".

He continued:  “And I used to, you know, initially try to get him to see that that isn’t how the world works. You can’t come out the other end of university and then decide to be in a band. You do it, you know, or you don’t do it".

“But I never got it out of my system,” the singer added. “I think that maybe, with hindsight, my dad thought that the sooner we fail, the sooner he gets me back to the idea of a formal education".

Earlier this week, Robert Smith also hinted that he is considering releasing a festive single with The Cure for the holiday season.

Smith said that he has written a "really catchy pop song", explaining that he is unsure about the best way to release it. More on this from Nova here.
