Golfer Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll.

News of the couple’s split will send shockwaves around the sport of golf, with Ms Stoll was often spotted cheering on her husband at tournaments, including acting as his caddie at the 2018 Masters Par-3 Contest.

The couple married at a lavish ceremony at Ashford Castle in 2017, and welcomed the arrival of their daughter Poppy in 2020.

McIlroy and Stoll tied the knot in front of over 200 guests at the Ashford Castle Estate. Ryder Cup golfers Paul McGinley, Sergio Garcia, Shane Lowry and Martin Kaymer attended this event.

Papers Filed

According to reports, Rory McIlroy’s communications team have now confirmed that a divorce has been filed, with papers officially submitted to a Florida court on Monday.

The team representing McIlroy have stated that the couple are still keen to ensure that they navigate their way through this difficult time as respectful and amicable as possible.

They are also determined to ensure that their daughter is surrounded with love and privacy.

Neither will be making any further comment at this time.

Last month, Ms Stoll was a noticeable absentee, as McIlroy competed at the Masters in Augusta.

Recently, Rory McIlroy also paid tribute to his mother at the weekend for US Mother’s Day, but did not mention Erica.

Rory McIlroy had first met Erica Stoll at the 2012 Ryder Cup, where she helped him make his tee time for a Sunday singles match, after he overslept, having worked as the manager for the Championship Volunteer Operations in 2011.

The couple made their relationship official in 2015, keeping a degree of privacy surrounding their personal life, with Erica content with staying out of the limelight, and from the cameras.

Erica had often been spotted travelling the world by her husband’s side at several major tournaments.

This news also comes after Rory McIlroy had won the Zurich Classic last month.
