A special stamp set has been unveiled to mark the 60th anniversary of The Who, The Royal Mail have announced.
The Royal Mail announced 12 special stamps will honour The Who and their formation six decades earlier.
Eight of these stamps are to feature some of the band's most famous album covers , with the remaining four stamps showing promotional photos or live performance images.
The albums which will be celebrated include: 1965’s ‘My Generation’, 1969’s ‘Tommy’, 1971’s ‘Who’s Next’, 1973’s ‘Quadrophenia’, 1978’s ‘Who Are You’, 1981’s ‘Face Dances’, 2006’s ‘Endless Wire’ and finally, 2019’s ‘WHO’.
As for the four remaining images, two will also be photos of the Who performing live from their show at London's Marquee Club in 1967, and the Kings Hall, Belle Vue in Manchester in 1973.
Speaking about the Royal Mail album collection, The Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey had this to say.
“The artwork on the album sleeves was almost as important to the success of the record as the music. It’s great to be reminded of them", he said.
Bandmate Pete Townshend also added: “Stamp! Stamp! Stamp! It’s what I’ve done on stage all my life, sometimes in the air. At last, my stamping, and that of my buddy Roger, has been honoured properly, and will help letters, parcels and birthday cards travel through time and space, just as we have".
This stamp collection will be available to pre-order from today (October 3), via this link here.
A special Presentation Pack will include all 12 of The Who stamps and will also be available for £22.80. They will go on general sale on October 17.
The Who become the latest band to receive their very own Royal Mail stamp collection, following on from The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Rolling Stones and the Spice Girls.
Earlier this month, An Post unveiled four special stamps to honour legendary Irish musicians Christy Dignam, Séamus Begley, Christy Dignam, Sinéad O'Connor and Shane MacGowan. Find out more here.
