The beloved singer's passing was confirmed yesterday (November 30). MacGowan had spent some time in hospital, having been treated for an infection, before being discharged last week.

“Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning with his wife Victoria and family by his side”.
Shane MacGowan played his final show with the Pogues at the Fête du bruit dans Landerneau Festival in France in August 2014, and his final show as a solo artist at Fies, Liverpool in 2018.

Leading the tributes to MacGowan, President Michael D Higgins released this statement.
Back in 2018, Higgins presented the beloved songwriter with a lifetime achievement award at the National Concert Hall in 2018, marking the singer's 60th birthday.
“Shane will be remembered as one of music’s greatest lyricists. So many of his songs would be perfectly crafted poems, if that would not have deprived us of the opportunity to hear him sing them”, Higgins wrote.
Singer Nick Cave, performed a memorable duet with MacGowan, of Louis Armstrong's 'What A Wonderful World'. He hailed the Pogues star as "the greatest songwriter of his generation".
Cave also added that the singer's death marked “a very sad day”. More on this here.
