A special festival to honour the late Pogues music legend Shane MacGowan will take place in Co Tipperary later this month.

This day will pay tribute to MacGowan, which will be held in Kilbarron Village, where he spent many extended Summer holidays in the family homestead in nearby Carney Commons.

Shane MacGowan died last November aged 65, after being treated for viral ecephalitis in hospital.

His funeral took place in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, following a procession in Dublin, including a horse-drawn carriage from South Lotts, through Pearse Street, to Westland Row.

“dancing at the crossroads”

Coming up on August 18, a festival will honour Shane MacGowan, confirmed by his sister, Siobhan McGowan.

She posted about this event on her Facebook page, saying that it will be full of “dancing at the crossroads”, with music, refreshments, a marquee.

At 3pm on the day, Siobhan will also dedicate “The Broad Majestic Shannon” monument in her brother’s memory.

The event is titled: “A Day of Commemoration & Celebration of Shane MacGowan”, taking place at the Broad Majestic Shannon festival at Kilbarron near Nenagh in north Tipperary.

Back in February, Shane MacGowan’s widow Victoria Mary Clarke paid this sweet tribute to her late husband.

Alongside a nine minute video of Shane singing, Clarke wrote the following caption.

“I feel like an absolute blubbering wreck today and it’s not even Valentine’s yet!”, she said.

Concluding the video which also shows MacGowan singing “Victoria is the best”, and “The streets were ringing with that in 1969”,  Clarke added, “Aw, that’s nice I like that”.
