Sir Ian McKellen was taken to hospital after falling off stage during a recent performance at the West End Theatre.

The Lord of the Rings star was portraying John Falstaff in a production of Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre when the accident happened.

McKellen was in a fight scene, before falling off the stage after losing his footing, where he was left writhing in pain.

Stage staff went over to help McKellen, with the remainder of the stage performance cancelled.

"good spirits"

Following this, a theatre's spokesperson released a statement, assuring the public that Ian McKellen remains in "good spirits", and is expected to make "a speedy and full recovery".

"Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian's fall during this evening's performance of Player Kings", the spokesperson said.

"Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits".

Sir Ian McKellen's representatives and the ambulance staff have yet to comment on the matter at the time of writing.

Player Kings is a production of Henry IV, parts one and two, adapted and directed by Robert Icke. It is due to be moved to Bristol Hippodrome in July, as well as being staged in Birmingham, Norwich, and Newcastle.

In December 2020, Ian McKellen said that he felt "euphoric" after he received the first of his two Covid vaccinations at London's Queen Mary's University Hospital.
