Actor Angus MacInnes, best known for his roles in the Star Wars films has passed, aged 77.

MacInnes' family announced in a statement that the actor had died "peacefully, surrounded by his family and love" just two days before Christmas on the 23rd of December.

MacInnes had played Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander, or Gold Leader, in ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.

Outside of the franchise, MacInnes had also appeared in 2004's 'Hellboy' as Sgt. Whitman, 1985's 'Witness' as Fergie, 2013's 'Captain Phillips' as a Maersk Alabama crew member and in 2007's 'Flight of Fury' as General Tom Barnes.

However, according to his family, Star Wars fans had always "held a special place in his heart,"

"He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga," they added. "He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community,"

MacInnes' character, Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander, was a former Imperial pilot who defected when ordered to bomb rebel-friendly areas of his home planet. The character dies during the first assault on the Death Star, the moon-sized weapon used to destroy planets, in ‘A New Hope’.
